5 weeks and 5 days

The Breakaways are spectacular formations rising out of the desert approximately 30km from Coober Pedy. Participants in the Marathon run through these flat topped mesas sporting an assortment of colours – vibrant yellow, sunset orange and brilliant white. A few kilometre’s in, the path aligns with the dog fence – at 5,600km long it is the longest continuous fence in the world – where runners get to run with the fence & moon plain on their left & the Breakaways on the right over the undulating graded track. Some participants even got to ride alongside emus! Turning right onto Kempe Road participants head along a graded track into town where the road becomes bitumised.

"Amazing scenery, and at times just me and my footfalls and empty gibber plain on either side. Seeing so far ahead from the tops of the rises was a bit of a mind game! …How often do you get to run in the desert and along the dingo fence?!” Kim Houghton, 2015 Winner Male 21.5km Run

“What we were doing now, was running in desert. With no trees, bush or even weeds... The hill I was climbing was just enough for me to think the course was outstanding and a must for anyone looking to get in a marathon that is more challenging than you would think…” Kevin Coyle, 2015 Winner Male 42km Run

“You certainly know how to put together a tough course. It was truly punishing at times, but that’s how we like it. The scenery was spectacular and at times it was hard to believe we were lucky enough to be running through it.” Karen Bentley, 2015 3rd Place Female 42km Run
