Victoria > The 492K ChallengeThe 492K Challenge is a new team event to run, walk, swim, or roll 492 kilometres during August to raise funds for projects that support people affected by leprosy in Indonesia.
Leprosy is a bacterial disease which attacks the nerves that control hands, feet, and eyes. Without treatment this can lead to loss of feeling and function in hands and feet, blindness, and even amputation.
No one should have to suffer the consequences of untreated leprosy. Sadly, discrimination and a lack of understanding means that many people don’t seek treatment soon enough. This can lead to life-long suffering and disability.
Every kilometre you move, and every dollar you raise, you will help us get one step closer to making sure leprosy treatment is available at all local health centres across Java in Indonesia. Indonesia has the third highest number of cases of leprosy in the world, and 10% are children. Children like 13-year-old Siti who is afraid to tell her friends at school in case they reject and exclude her. Without medication and ongoing care, Siti’s dream of becoming a doctor would be over. Early treatment is critical for children so that they don’t suffer permanent disability.
The money you raise from The 492K Challenge will go to transforming lives by breaking down stigma and creating safe, welcoming communities. You will help educate healthcare professionals to provide the treatment and ongoing support needed to ensure children affected by leprosy can live full, productive lives.
You can cure a child like Siti in Indonesia today.
Registrations are OPEN NOW and we would love you to take part!
Why 492Ks? This is the distance between our two projects in Indonesia - and back again. A chance for you to cure a child and create inclusive, supporting communities.
